IS PHOTOSHOP KILLING PHOTOGRAPHY?

Allow me to explain my points in this way “Is sandwiches killing the sales of plain white bread?”

While making Sandwiches we make use of 2 pieces of white bread with fillings in between. Some people prefer sandwiches while some prefer just plain white bread but in both, the cases of white bread are still needed and thus is bought.

Similarly, some people prefer posting and printing photos without editing with any kind of photo editing tools like Photoshop or coral draw. Many people prefer editing their photos before posting or printing. Depends on the priority and need they have but either way, the original unedited photo is needed.

Sandwiches didn’t stop loaves of plain white bread going for sale in the bakery. Sandwiches are made of white bread. Because sandwiches potentially taste better than plain bread, more people will eat bread because of sandwiches.

Neither will editing photos stop the pleasure of taking photographs in its raw form. Edited photos are based on raw photos. Because edited photos potentially look better than raw photos, more people will take more photos because of photo editing programs.

Taking the Second case of “Music industry”:

Music till 1970’s-80’s, I believe were completely out of musical instruments and vocals. The vocals, instrument, sequencing, timing etc had to be at the right time at the right place. If it did not turn out good the first time, go for another take and keep repeating the process. Then computers and digital music came. So a singer sings his/her part separately, and the instruments are played separately, they are combined in the studio. Now the music director also adds some variation to the song with computers and finally the song is shipped. This final touch of including this variation is debatable. Yes, the sounds are not coming from a natural source, most of the cases it may not be even reproducible without using computers, but the actual song might have a beauty of its own.

I look at this as another instrument for producing good music, a superb tool.

It’s the same case with Photoshop; it’s a beautiful tool and a great addition to create great work of art.

People who have a talent for photography will always rise above those who don’t. No amount of technology can surpass human creativity.
